Research Focus

Maternal and fetal health:  specifically, pathogenesis of congenital viral infections using a nonhuman primate model.  Interests include congenital viral infections (specifically Zika virus and mpox virus), maternal immune responses to infection, neurodevelopment during childhood, and translational nonhuman primate models of pregnancy.

My research expertise lies in the area of macaque models of congenital Zika virus infection, immune responses to congenital infections, and long–term neurodevelopmental assessments of Zika virus–exposed macaques. My clinical expertise is in the area of pediatric infectious diseases. My research expertise in congenital Zika virus infection began with the start of the Zika virus epidemic when I began working on the first macaque model of congenital Zika virus infection. Both my flavivirus virology background and pediatric clinical expertise have been critical to the development of a macaque model of congenital Zika virus infection, long–term neurodevelopmental assessments, and protective antibody responses. As a pediatric infectious diseases physician, I am skilled in organizing and leading teams of experts with complementary skills to achieve a common goal: defining the long–term neurodevelopmental outcomes of Zika virus–exposed infant macaques and immune correlates of protection.
